He could feel it, deep down in his gut. He could still feel that icy cold he had felt that day in the storm. The day he met her, the day his joyful world came to an end. The day he realized that he would never be happy again, not without her by his side. Perhaps it was silly for him to feel so strongly about a she-cat he hardly knew, but he knew that he would settle for no one else.
The coldness in his chest was not from the storm or had never been caused by the storm. It had been caused by the impossible iciness he felt in his heart. The ice that really wasn’t there but had caused him so much pain already. He laughed, a cold harsh laugh that held no real joy. He was so stupid, so very very stupid. Why did he have to fall for a she-cat that would do nothing but break his heart.
He stared into the water, looking as his reflection. His eyes couldn’t leave it. His face was twisted in a way he had never seen it before. His face was twisted in pain, in outrage, in agony. It was so hard to recognize the face he looked at. He realized that he was going to feel this way eventually, but to bring it upon him so soon, at such a young age…. It seemed cruel.
He dipped a paw in the ice cold water, loving the way he interrupted the flow of the stream and the way it felt to his silky smooth fur. He loved the way he immediately shivered and felt cold, the way it took away from the iciness in his chest. Yet again he grinned, a feeling less grin that would have chilled his mother and father to the bone.

J A D E S O N G , Jadesong awakened to yet another chilly morning, though nothing that could be considered out of the ordinary, given that leaf - bare now clutched the forest with an icy grip. Her first thoughts were one of mild panic. A training session! An apprentice! She scrambled out of her den, feeling even more panicked when she saw it less than half - full. Her fur flew up to protect her rather slight body as best it could as the first gusts of icy wind really chilled her to the bone. She regretted scheduling a session so early, though there was nothing that could be done about it at the present time. She had made a committment and was, not for anything, going to budge from it! Her paws seemed to skim over the ground as she reached the apprentice den, casually peering around and calling his name. 'Eclipsepaw? Are you up, already?' No familiar voice issued from the depths, and as her eyes adjusted to the relative gloom, she did not think she could see any familiar ball of fur, either. With a slightly puzzled look creeping onto her face, she retreated from the den.
Her paws skimmed the ground again as she pushed out of the camp, her tail flying straight out behind her. Thoughts whirled through her head; none of them pleasant. Had he decided to hide from her? Did he dislike her already? Was he lying, drowned or beaten down? It would surely be her fault it he was! It was more by chance than truly scenting him that she found his small frame, hunched over the water. A low laugh issued from him, a laugh that told her that all was not well. Hairs prickled upon her spine, flattening as soon as the sound had ended. 'Eclipsepaw?' Why did she sound so tentative? Something told her he had not yet heard her. She walked a little closer; half of her wanting to sneak and the other approach with dignity. 'Eclipsepaw?!' She spoke a little louder, and upon seeing him reach into the water with his paw, leapt forward. Her jaws hovered over the base of his neck where she knew the scruff would lie, poised to stop him leaping into the icy depths. She caught sight of his reflection, the hollow grin upon his face, and froze. Her paws moved rapidly back, and her voice was little more than a whisper when she uttered; 'time for our training.'

a voice hung in the air. It was quiet, tentative almost to the point of not being there. It was a question though, that much was clear. He wasn’t able to make out exactly what she was saying. His eyes darted around the river’s bank, and didn’t see anyone. eclipsepaw?! this time he was able to make out exactly what she said and who said it. His head whipped around, his paw touching the water carefully.
It all happened fast after that. Jadesong suddenly held his scruff in her jaws and was pulling him away from the riverbank. He growled a loud protest and twisted in a way that freed him from her grasp. He glared at the she-cat even as she spoke. He ignored her words with a slight hiss. He stood up and stalked up to her, his nose barely a breathe’s length away from hers.
I was not about to jump off the riverbank. I am not suicidal. You didn’t need to pull me away. his voice was ice, spoken venom that could inflict pain on its pitiful victim. He turned around and began to lick his rustled fur, continueing to protest about how he wasn’t going to jump and that was a silly thought. He sighed softly and turned to face his mentor, his face a mask that disguised his feelings.
His voice was soft this time, velvety in it’s texture. I apologize. You caught me off guard. What are your plan for today. he vaguely remembered the training session that they were supposed to have. He winced, knowing that his pain almost got him in trouble with his mentor. He dipped his head in respect and looked her in the eyes. His sky blue eyes were ice, but they were genuinely curious and attentive.

J A D E S ON G , His voice cut through the air, filled with frost as cold as their surroundings. He sounded so hostile that she found herself filled with doubt; would their mentor and apprenticeship relationship be possible? She was not sure how to responde to such a harsh remark, for she was a gentle creature, and used to cats treating her in the same manner. Young ones, these days. . she thought, with a small shake of her head, even though it had not been so long ago that she had been a young apprentice herself. 'Well, I was just trying--' She cut herself off. No response was probably better in this situation, given his apparent rage. Jadesong was beginning to feel more than a little out of her depth. She knew she should be asserting herself, but she could not bring herself to snap back. It was just not in her nature.
His apology gave her renewed hope, for both of them. 'That's alright,' she mewed, as gruffly as she could manage. 'I'll remember how able you are, next time,' though her eyes glittered. 'My plans? I thought perhaps a--' She considered her options. Perhaps not fighting; that could lead to more raised tempers, something she did not desire. Hunting on the other hand, could give her time to assess his skills, before getting into serious business. 'Hunt,' she finished, knowing her stall may put him in a worse mood, for reasons she could not quite find the words to explain.
'We're right by the river,' she found herself adding, almost as if she were defending her choice against stinging words that had not yet emerged. 'Can you tell me what you already know? We'll be focusing on fish, well, naturally.' She thought it best to allow him to tell her any skills he may have already picked up. Perhaps that way they could have a more peaceful session together. 'I hope you don't mind. I thought it was a good way to get to know each other. .' Why was she explaining herself to him? She had every right to make him do whatever she pleased! With a swish of her tail she placed herself closer to the banks of the river, feeling the familiar rush that came with hunting prey.
