The refreshing and clean fragrance of a breeze coming directly from the middle of the lake to the shore on the ShadowClan territory was definitely a great break from all of those musky smells from the pine forests. Different scents from different Clans, cats and other animals mixed with the odor that clung directly in the air. If Clan borders mark the difference between the scents of the Clans, the large body of water was evidently different. This is a point where all scents from around the lake mix together so easily that it was difficult to recognize one from another. One cat that was able to experience the mixture of the scent was named Snowpaw. Usually, he would venture out as far as he dared and this was no exemption. This was probably the white apprentice’s first time to be at the lake without his mentor. He had liked this place more than any of their territory, for this is the only place where he could see the other Clans’ territories without breaking the Warrior Code or something. He liked it so much that he even pushed his luck to escape from the camp without his mentor or any warrior. He even pulled his brother, Redpaw, to come with him just in case any trouble happened to him. Redpaw was one of his best friends, and definitely the most dependable and wonderful of them all. If he was to run into trouble, he was sure that the ginger apprentice would be by his side, protecting him from all harm. Although they were littermates as far as Snowpaw knew, the white-pelted cat still viewed his brother as an older cat. His brother was more protective and more mature than Snowpaw himself, whom everyone knows as an apprentice who still acts as a kit. “Hey, Redpaw!” he shouted, trying to take his brother’s attention. He wasn’t sure if his brother had seen the lake like this, so he wanted to share the sight with him. From what Snowpaw’s little eyes could glimpse through the thin undergrowth, he could see the Twolegs destroying their miniature nests and those monsters by the lake were beginning to disappear. Since the Twolegs only come by the lake during Greenleaf, the incoming Leaf-fall would probably bring more peace to their territory and he would be able to view the lake’s magnificent appearance without Twolegs invading it. Snowpaw turned around from the lake and to the forest. Where was Redpaw? Maybe he gave in to his excitement once again and forgot to wait for his brother. He called for Redpaw again, hoping that he was just nearby. A fresh whiff of a mouse took his interest for a while. Maybe Redpaw was out hunting? Decided that he should join his brother in his hunt, the white apprentice ran back from the lake and to the forest. It wouldn’t hurt to have some extra prey while they were out of camp. He could use this as an excuse out of trouble if a warrior find out. “Redpaw!” he called once again.

The lake, the lake.. lake.. lake.. lake.. The single word reverberated in the dark ginger tabby's mind as he absent-mindedly followed the flash of white that darted across the path and into the forest from time to time. The apprentice was on the verge of shouting to the white tom when he caught himself. He was the one who had relented to his brother's constant pestering and agree to follow Snowpaw to the lake. But that had been before he had heard about the catch-- that they would be going alone to the forest, unsupervised. But he had still come along so the next destination now was the lake, wasn't it? Without anything better to do, the ginger 'paw lifted his muzzle and took in a long breath.
The air had a slight water-like tinge to it, along with the mix of rivers, oak trees, marshes, and pine trees; the scents from each of the four territories floating toward the large body of water and mixing there, giving both an interesting and curious smell. Redpaw halted for a second or two, his attention on the smells that the lake could offer. Giving himself a shake to snap out of a trance, he picked up his speed and was soon loping easily after his snowy littermate. The red-orange tom had never been to the lake before as his mentor hadn't taken him yet. As the apprentice moved on, a whiff of something nice slipped into his nose. Mouse, he thought with a slight shiver of excitement? Happiness?
Whatever the shiver was, he was going to catch the mouse. His second kill. Dropping to a hunter's crouch jut the way his mentor had taught him, the dark 'paw sniffed the air to determine the mouse's whereabouts before padding forward slowly. He could hear someone faintly calling his name but ignored it, thankful that the mouse hadn't heard it and was still nibbling whatever it had in its paws. Then the voice called again, closer this time and just when he was this close to the mouse. With a squeak, the mouse darted away accompanied by the angry yowl of Redpaw as he leapt forward in an attempt to give chase. But it was too late. The tiny mammal darted into a hole leaving an angry apprentice preyless. Out of the pine trees gamboled Snowpaw, the cause of his failure. The happy-go-lucky snowy apprentice was one of Redpaw's only friends as well as littermate, but still.. "Snowpaw you shrew-brain! You scared away my mouse! I could have gotten it if it hadn't been for you!" the dark apprentice burst out, his voice a mixture of a snarl and hiss as his cold amber eyes flashed angrily. With a soft growl, he turned around with a lash of his tail and began to pad away.

As the white apprentice ran throughout the forest, different colors or shades of green, brown and orange flashed in his eyes. The trees, herbs, shrubs and other plants in their territory were slowly shedding their leaves as they prepare to face the cold winds of leaf-fall. Once leaf-fall is gone, they still have to get ready for the following season, leaf-bare. Prey would begin to dwindle during these seasons and all Clans didn’t like it. But at least, Snowpaw believes this is the time for the forest to have a break from all the hunting the warriors made and the foraging of herbs that the medicine cats did. Before the snowy apprentice had noticed it, he was face-to-face with his brother, Redpaw. He had been leaping from one place to another that he had lost him in the forest. Snowpaw smiled as he finally found that his brother wasn’t lost or entirely in trouble, but he had thought he was hunting something out there. He beamed a smile at him, knowing that he might be happy to see him too, but he thought wrong. Redpaw looked furious and seemed to be fuming with anger, so to speak. Snowpaw seemed confused at first, before Redpaw spat words in the white apprentice’s face. “Snowpaw you shrew-brain! You scared away my mouse! I could have gotten it if it hadn't been for you!”So, he was really hunting! Is my voice that loud?Words like that might’ve stung like a bee, if you aren’t Snowpaw. He always thought that Redpaw was just sharp-tongued with his words, always exaggerating whatever he says and not totally meaning it sometimes. He’s just too aloof to open himself to others, as Snowpaw always said to others whenever they remark something about Redpaw’s rudeness. He needs something to protect himself if he doesn’t have friends to do so. Perhaps this attitude had stuck to the ginger apprentice, as he continued to do this even if there isn’t anyone besides the two of them. “Don’t be too gruff, Redpaw,” Snowpaw calmly replied, licking his ears as he tried to cool off his temper. “At least, I finally found you. And look, you’ve found its nest!” The white apprentice quickly darted from his brother’s side and to the hole where the mouse made its quick escape. He crouched down and tried to sniff the mouse inside it. The scent of prey was still fresh, as the brown furred animal had just passed the place. He placed his paw inside it and blindly thrashed it, trying if his paws could grab the mouse. “Do you think the mouse is still inside this?” he asked. After a while, he stuck his paw out and gave up. “Come on, there’s still a lot of prey out there,” he remarked. He isn’t sure whether or not it could cheer up his grump old brother, but at least it’s somewhat true. He isn’t exactly the type of cat who’d be happy on such not-so-new news. “The preys aren’t going to hide in their holes forever,” Snowpaw assured, not knowing that Redpaw probably knew it too. “Come on, I’ll help you hunt for more.” With that being said, the white apprentice quickly sprinted again in the forest as he tried to find the spots in their territory where prey is abundant.
