a biting wind cut through the horseplace, making even the horses feel a bit uneasy in their stalls. a wind that could chill even a windclan cat to the bone. as it was, most short-haired riverclan cats shivered and stayed inside the camp today. eclipsepaw was proud to be one of the few cats out hunting in the cold biting temperatures. his fluffy siamese coat kept him comfortable enough to be able to enjoy his hunting expedition. his nose was lifted to the air, trying to pick up a scent on the wind. the scent of something living, of something breathing above the surface of the ground.
he knew better than to try and fish in such icy weather. getting his paws wet would mean a cold that would keep him in camp for up to a week. he shivered, mostly from the thought, but slightly from the cold. not many fluffy coats could stand up to this weather , he being no different. the ground was cold under his paws, he felt no warmth from any previous cats or even prey coming by. his nose could pick up no scent of anything living on the wind. he growled in frustration. all he could smell was the snow storm on the rise.
he leapt into the air, just trying to stretch his muscles and keep warm. he hissed softly when he landed. eclipsepaw never liked having an unsuccessful hunting trip. it shamed him to have to go home with empty jaws and an empty stomache that howled like the wind. to see the hopeful gazes of the queens and elders on him, only to look away in dissapointment. he hung his head, preparing for the trip back to camp. he sighed softly. even the most eager cat could be beaten down by winds like these.
he felt something wet in his eyes and looked up. small little flurries of snow danced in the wind. he knew that going back to camp would become hazardous, that this kind of storm would be one that he should sit out, wait till it was over, and then go back to camp. first he had to find some sort of refuge in the land. he dared not go anywhere near the horseplace and the cats that lived there. he scanned the horizon again and again, looking for a hole to hide in.
he finally spotted one on windclans side of the border. he hesitated a second before darting over. he didn't want to go into another clans territory, but the situation seemed to have provided him with no choice. he darted over to hide in the hole, hoping the snow would erase his scent from the area. he immeadiatley felt warmer once out of the wind. he looked around. the hole appeared to be big enough for two cats at the most. he sighed happily and looked outside. he saw another small figure in the cold. hey theres a hole to hide in over here. he called to them.

Badgerpaw raced after a skinny rabbit, eyes wide as kittypet food bowls. The rabbit seemed to be getting the advantage, but the small apprentice shook the thought out of her mind. Until it raced over the ShadowClan border.
"Rabbit-dung!" She yowled, standing near the border for a moment. But a new scent tickled her nose that almost made her screech.
RiverClan.
It had just started snowing, white gentle snowflakes laying thickly on the ground. This would be a harsh storm. Better find that stinky fur-ball before it got too heavy.
With a hiss, she thrust her muzzle to the ground, tracking the scent. It led in a straight line, so the cat must have known what it was looking for.
Badgerpaw raised her head and found herself right in front of a hole. With a RiverClan cat inside. The cat looked as big as an apprentice, but handsome as a warrior. She shook the thought away with a slight shake of her head. The cat didn't look familiar. The only Gathering she'd been to, she had stuck close to her mentor.
"What in the name of StarClan are you doing here?" |
She hissed, giving him a harsh glare. With a look behind her, she noticed that the snow was falling fast and hard. Badgerpaw sighed. "You're lucky. It's snowing pretty hard and I'm sure neither of us want to freeze our tails off." She slid into the hole, noticing how little space there was. It was probably an old rabbit's nest. Definitely not a badger set, though. It wasn't that big. Once she was inside, she gave the apprentice another look over. He was a bit bigger than her, and sleek-furred. Typical RiverClan. She couldn't help thinking that he was handsome despite what her WindClan blood was telling her. "If we're going to survive staying here for a while, I'd better introduce myself. I'm Badgerpaw. Of WindClan. And if you haven't noticed, you're on my territory." She held back a snarl before waiting for him to reply. [/blockquote][/blockquote]. the storm only continued to become colder and even more harsh as it got stronger. it only proved his desicion to hide in this hole. the stencth of windclan blasted his nostrils, making him crinkle his chocalate brown nose. he continued to look out at the storm, watching each delicate flake carefully, wondering what it would be like to jump up and catch one. he chuckled softly, ignoring the kitten instinct to jump out and grab one from the sky. the urge to take that flake home to his mom.
he spotted the small cat that he had called out to. the cat came closer, slowly inching their way over to his shelter. he grinned, watching the black and white cat crawl closer.she appeared to be even colder than he was. he found it hard to pity her, being the windclan cat that he was. her nose was stuck to the ground and she appeared to be angered. he saw her pause and look at him before coming closer.
she was very clearly angered by his prescense on her territory, for she was clearly a windclan cat. eclipsepaw looked her over, seeing the slight bristle in her fur. still he grinned. her eyes, striking against her black and white pelt, were bright green and peircing. they were hostile. still he grinned, his fur flat and his eyes bright. she looked good angry, even though he knew he couldn't touch. that wasn't to say he was interested in females yet. he still had training to think about. he couldn't think of females. not with his goal in mind.

Of WindClan. And if you haven't noticed, you're on my territory." eclipsepaw listened to her voice, it sounded like wind rushing over rocks. it was soft at first, a gentle breeze that ruffled your fur, but became harsh, like that biting winds outside. he sat down and curled his tail over his paws.
yeah, you could say i'm lucky. i dont think of it that way, ive got windclan stench stuck up my nose. he curled his nose up theatrically.the names eclipsepaw, pleased to meet you miss badgerpaw. and i am not stupid, mouse brain, i know exactly where i am. this is the closet place that i could hidefrom the storm. no need to throw a hissy fit, miss priss. he was teasing her on purpose, just to see what her fur looked like ruffled even more. he smiled softly, making it clear that he was just joking. he beconed with his tail for her to sit down with him.it was going to be a long storm, his nose told him that.

With a pounding in her heart, Badgerpaw looked outside again. Please StarClan, make this storm end soon. She thought, then turning to keep her eye on the RiverClan tom.
Stupid tom. Why, in the name of StarClan, was he smiling? He seemed to be looking her over as she had done to him moments before, however. His fur was flat unlike her own, bristled pelt, and his eyes bright and happy. Was he stupid?
He sat down, and Badgerpaw eyed him for a minute before doing the same. She sat facing the storm, so she could constantly check if she could escape. With an angry, "Humph!", she noticed how small the hole was, and how pressed against Eclipsepaw she had to be.
When he commented on WindClan, she snarled. But Badgerpaw stopped. If they got into a fight or anything of the sort, it would be bad. They were in such a small space, a fight probably wasn't even possible.
StarClan. This tom seemed so happy! With the names he called her, maybe not so much anymore. "Oh, if you know where you are, you must know that I have the right to kick you out right now? Or even better, claw your handsome face off-"
She froze. Had she really said that out loud? Ducking her head, Badgerpaw came closer, shaking her head slightly. Her fur lie flat again, though her bright green eyes were more dull. She seemed... Sad? Was that the right word? No. Not really. But that's what she looked like.
"Look, when I said that- I mean- I was trying to-" She was struggling for words. "Oh, I'll just shut up now." .

to say the hole that he had found was small would be a bit of an understamement. it was tiny. even when they were both standing, their noses had touched. but now that they both sat, they was enough room for them both to be comfortable, but not enough to be not touching completley. her back fur brushed his chest gently. he chuckled once more before lifting a paw to lick it gently.
badgerpaw was facing the storm, and it was clear she wanted nothing more than for the storm to be over. this storm in gonna be here awhile. i hope she doesn't mind sitting here for that long. even his nose had begun to adjust to the windclan scent enough that he could make out badgerpaw's own scent. she smelled like wind that came off the water, teasing his nose and making his heart long for the water.
"Oh, if you know where you are, you must know that I have the right to kick you out right now? Or even better, claw your handsome face off-" he stiffled a laugh while he watched her become even more flustered than he thought possible. his blue eyes danced with amusement when she cut herself off. what an amazing compliment from a windclan cat. handsome face he again held back a laugh. even in that context. none of the riverclan females had described him that way.
her fur finally laid flat and the fire in her eyes was extinquished. with her head ducked, she could have looked sad. eclipsepaw resisted the urge to go over and comfort her like he would have if she were skypaw. still, even in her less firey state, she looked amazing, much better than any old riverclan female. "Look, when I said that- I mean- I was trying to-" "Oh, I'll just shut up now."
he sighed softly, wondering if he could make her feel better. well, i suppose you could tear my head off. i'd rather have you tear it off and die at your pretty paws, than by anyone else's. his mew was genuine, you could tell by his voice. he meant everyword he was telling her. because your much prettier than any other female i've ever seen. he turned away from her, shocked by the turth of his own words. word count: 506

Badgerpaw clearly wasn't enjoying how small the hole was. Her tail flicked back and forth, and the she-cat surely wouldn't be sad if it slapped Eclipsepaw in the face.
Only, was she that angry? Or was it just a game? Eclipsepaw, she hated to admit, really was quite handsome. He was long, unlike the small, wiry cats of WindClan.
Speaking of which, she realized with a jolt, the infamous stench of fish wasn't making Badgerpaw gag anymore. StarClan, what's happening?
Badgerpaw snuck a glance at the RiverClan apprentice. His blue eyes were happy, and she had no idea why. At the moment, anyway.
W-was he laughing at me? No. I was clearly just imagining it. But then again, he is a RiverClan cat. She flicked her tail slightly, then wrapped it back around her paws.
The words that came out of his mouth next shocked her.
"P-pretty?" She echoed, aghast. The black-and-white she-cat was lost for words. For an arrogant cat, she sure was shy at the moment.
"W-well, you're pretty cute yourself. All the WindClan cats nowadays are just plain stupid." She found herself spitting at the end of her sentence, thinking of a certain apprentice whose name had to do with fire.
Wait.
He's a RiverClan cat! Badgerpaw's eyes opened wide, letting out a small moan. She had just fully realized what was happening. But he wasn't like any other WindClan tom that she knew! Not out of the apprentices, anyway.
"But I'll have to settle for one of those idiots."
|
She sighed, keeping her eye on a snowflake and watched it make it's snowy descent to the white frosted ground. She didn't dare look at Eclipsepaw. Not after what they had both said. Badgerpaw's heart was pounding, the blood roaring in her ears. What the heck happened to her? Just a few rabbit-hops ago, she had been defending WindClan territory. Now, she was in a tiny hole with a RiverClan cat. And enjoying it. [/blockquote][/blockquote].

the wind outside still clearly blazed when eclipsepaw looked over his shoulder to check on it. his cursed silently. the hole was starting to feel to clausterphopic and squished. but he seemed not to be as disturbed as badgerpaw was. she looked small, curled up by the entrance. he sighed. what in the world had he done to make her upset? everyone liked eclipsepaw in his clan, and for the world he couldn't understand why badgerpaw didn't.
what had he done wrong? she froze yet again when he said she was pretty and he sighed. again, he had caught the she-cat off gaurd. he didn't want to do that, he wanted her to like him. he wanted her to be his friend, but she seemed not to share the same feelings. his whiskers fell slightly and he hunched his figure up, feeling small for the first time ever.
"P-pretty?" she stuttered softly. he growled in frustration, why did she make him repeat himself? it had been thoughtless the first time he said it, but true at the same time. yes, pretty. much prettier than riverclan she-cats. i think it has something to do with the fact that i can't have you. that or the fact that i don't think of riverclan she-cats as anything more than sisters, long lost sisters. and i don't think most males like to think of their sister as pretty. it's weird
"W-well, you're pretty cute yourself. All the WindClan cats nowadays are just plain stupid" his whiskers and eyes brighten slightly as she said that, but he knew that they shouldn't. he tried to force himself to calm down. she was just a windclan cat, not a word out of he mouth should make him feel the way he did now. he growled in frustration, because, hard as he tried, he couldn't help but feel excited as he was.
"But I'll have to settle for one of those idiots." again his whisker fell as he felt pity for her. again he hunched himself up. he wanted to tell her, ' no you don't you can have whoever you want.' but he knew he couldn't, he shouldn't. he knew he should keep his maw shut and not say a single thing to her. but he did open his maw and he practically whimpered . yeah, i guess you do.

The snow only seemed to be falling heavier. Badgerpaw's thoughts drifted to her Clan. Had they noticed she hadn't come back yet? Would they go looking for her? Or would they sit out the storm? Shaking the thoughts away, she knew it was useless to think about it. It would just drive her crazy.
Eclipsepaw was a nice cat. Too nice. Nice enough for Badgerpaw to happily share a den with him. Maybe one a bit bigger than this hole, though. But that was the problem. She just couldn't do that. He was a RiverClan cat. She was a WindClan cat. It's easy math. Even a kit could do it. Even kits know not to associate themselves with RiverClan. But here was Badgerpaw, doing just that.
"The WindClan toms clearly don't think of any she-cat like a sister. They're wolves."
|
Badgerpaw sighed, thinking about it. "That's what I like about you, Eclipsepaw." She had slightly avoided his words, but it was the only response she could come up with, to be honest. Her heart was still pounding. Eclipsepaw seemed thrilled when Badgerpaw mentioned her dislike for many of the toms. She found it a little amusing, and she let out a small mrrow of laughter. But it didn't last. When she mentioned she would have to end up with one of them, the RiverClan cat sagged. The poor thing. Badgerpaw let out a puff of air, giving him a sorry look. "I'd rather not, though." Who was she kidding? Eclipsepaw wouldn't get it. He was a RiverClan cat anyway. What saddened Badgerpaw was that she had to keep reminding herself just that. eclipsepaw found his mind wandering to an irrelevent topic, the reason his mom, born whitepaw, was renamed articmoon. she too had been caught up in a snowstorm like this as an apprentice. she had been struck with deadly green cough and she nearly died. the medicine cat though that would be it. but she suffered long term consequences, like a long term cough and running nose.
he remembered his dad telling him how much he cried when she had been struck with green cough again, this one having almost taken her life. the way he cried when he thought that he lost her. eclipsepaw's heart clenched now like it had when his dad told him. he knew that he did not want to suffer like that. he never wanted to come close to losing someone he loved like that. it would be too close.
"The WindClan toms clearly don't think of any she-cat like a sister. They're wolves." "That's what I like about you, Eclipsepaw." her sweet windy voice broke through his thought and he listened to her sigh. it should have shocked him that windclan toms were like that. but it didn't. it would never have shocked him. some tom don't give she-cat's the respect that they need. his heart unclenched as he spoke these words, feeling better already.
his eyes rested on her green ones, pretty as they were, his heart seemed immune to them this one time. he knew that he could say exactly what he wanted in that moment and not have to fear her dislike. thank you badgerpaw. it seems that not all windclan cats are like that though. after all, there is you. his voice was soft, almost angelic. the smile on his maw didn't reach his sad eyes.
"I'd rather not, though." her voice was soft, almost pathetic in his ears and he winced. he kept his voice formal, and his facial expressions gave nothing away when he spoke his next words. good luck with your romantic endeavours. but they are none of bussiness. his voice sounded harsh in his ears, rejecting someone that he was beginning to like. his heart was loosing the war in his mind. he looked away, unable to see those green eyes. for fear of the hurt in them.

Badgerpaw was just beginning to enjoy being in the hole, to be honest. She knew she shouldn't, but here she was. She called herself a loyal cat of WindClan, but what about now? Would this moment follow her? So whenever she thought about being loyal, she would say to herself, 'No. I'm not loyal. Remember that day with Eclipsepaw?' It would be known as that day, wouldn't it? No matter how much she didn't want it to. She knew it would.
Badgerpaw nodded. "I'm not surprised you agree. You didn't seem like the kind of cat to think otherwise."
|
As they looked at each other, Badgerpaw felt her paws tingling. She couldn't look away, either. This feeling... She liked it and she hated it. She couldn't decide which. Eclipsepaw's words struck her in the heart. She didn't know what to say. It was sweet, for sure. "And I'm sure there's at least one RiverClan tom that I've met who doesn't seem that bad either." Badgerpaw meant it. She was hoping Eclipsepaw would understand that. But why wasn't he smiling? Badgerpaw came a little closer. If it was possible, anyway. She looked at him for only a brief moment before frowning herself. She didn't ask what, but she knew he was upset about something. And she had a feeling she had caused it. The frown vanished. But he seemed to have no facial expressions at all. His voice was straight and unfeeling, unlike the path of the river it had been. His words. They hurt. She knew they shouldn't. But they hurt badly. Bardgerpaw backed away as far as she could, which wasn't much. "W-what?" She paused, shaking her head. She knew it was too good to be true. "Good luck to you as well." Her voice was slightly shaking, and it hurt her to say the words. Looking outside and refusing to make eye contact, she hoped the storm stopped soon. At least enough for her to get home. "I'm not surprised you agree. You didn't seem like the kind of cat to think otherwise." her words should have warmed him from nose to tail, should have made him smile and grin and forget where he really was. but he just couldn't. he couldn't grin like a fool and pretend like he wasn't breaking her heart.thank you his words came out choked, like he had something caught in his throat.
"And I'm sure there's at least one RiverClan tom that I've met who doesn't seem that bad either." he managed a week smile, like all he wanted to do was nuzzle her and tell her never to leave his side. he felt flattered, but even her flattery couldn't break through the ice in his heart. the ice that now caused him to choke in pain, to wish he'd never met this pretty she-cat that he was starting to care for. you are too kind solemn and tragic.
then he spoke those words, that seemed to have cut as deep as he thought they would. her heart broken what caused his heart to clench in pain. he had done something he never thought he'd ever do. he had hurt someone he cared for. the spasms of pain it sent through his body caught him by surprise and he began panting, even though it was cold. he made his way to the entrance, needing to get out and breath without choking on her sweet scent. he paused next to her and nuzzled her cheek gently. then he brought his muzzle to her ear and began to whisper softly.
we may have been well met badgerpaw, but may we never meet again. for if we ever were to meet again, i don't think i'd be able to let you walk away. i don't think i'd ever be able to leave you again, to live without you if i saw you again. his voice was gentle and sweet, like honey. he hoped it would soothe the wound he inflicted upon her. he finally broke out of the tunnel, running as far away as he could, but only making it to the river before he burst into tears.
wosorry it took so long. but it broke my heart just to write that. poor eclipse and badger.
